Buying a Pedometer to Track Daily Activity Level

As I mentioned in my previous post, I bought a pedometer to get a better grasp of how many calories I burn a day. In order to do this, I needed to know my activity level and a measurement of one’s daily step count is a good indicator of this (sedentary, lightly active, moderately active, active, etc.)

I bought the Omron HJ-720ITC Pocket Pedometer from Amazon.com based on reviews on Amazon and at a few other sources. What sealed the deal for me is the software that comes with it to let you easily track your steps and provides colorful little graphs - I’m a very visual person.

So the Omron Pedometer was nice and small and fairly easy to set up. I had it in my jean’s front coin pocket and then later attached via the included belt clip for all day yesterday. The only time I didn’t have the pedometer on me was when took a shower after the gym.

After reading other people’s comments, it seemed that most people were surprised by their step count; many did not even come close to 10,000 steps per day (for an active lifestyle) despite thinking beforehand that they were pretty active. Would I be one of these people?

Well, after 24 hours of recording, my step count for Day 1 of using the pedometer is:

11,594 steps!!

This include 11 minutes (1,225 steps) of “aerobic steps” (going faster than 60 steps per minute for 10 minutes or more).

Other stats:

260.01 calories burned

14.31 grams of fat

4.94 miles walked

It seems that I do have an active lifestyle, but I have to take into account that yesterday wasn’t necessarily a typical day for me. I went out later in the evening to see a friend’s band and walked home, which was a good mile home. Plus, a lot of that walking was after midnight, so today’s numbers won’t be typical either. I’ll need to gather a full week of results to see what I normally do, but right now, I’m feeling good about my activity level.

Having this pedometer is a great motivational tool to keep me walking more. Being able to actually see concrete numbers gets to my ego and encourages me to do more every day. I’m really glad I got this.
